Lythwood Lodge

Lythwood is a country lodge at Lidgetton West, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands just outside Howick. The estate covers 275 acres of lawns, forest and river frontage on the Lions River, and it is one of the stops on the Midlands Meander. Most guests come for a weekend of fresh air, fishing and walking, or for a wedding or conference.

What to expect

There are 33 rooms, from self-catering cottages up to executive suites, all with their own bathroom and a fireplace for Midlands winters. The main building has a bar and a restaurant, so you do not need to drive anywhere for dinner.

Most of what there is to do is outdoors. Trout fishing is allowed on the estate’s dam and the river, but bring your own rod. There are forest walking trails, a pool, a croquet lawn, and good riding for mountain bikers in the surrounding valley.

Good to know

Lythwood does a lot of weddings and events, with a conference centre for up to 300 people and a chapel on site, so ask whether a function is on during your dates if you want a quiet stay. Golfers have Bosch Hoek, Sakabula and Victoria Club within about 30 minutes, and Karkloof Canopy Tours is nearby.
