Abalone Lodges
Self-catering log cabins and family houses in Lower Old Place, Knysna, with lagoon views, a shared pool and a braai at each unit.
Abalone Lodges is a cluster of self-catering cabins and small houses on Herons Way in Lower Old Place, a residential pocket on the western side of Knysna. Every unit looks out over the Knysna lagoon, and the set-up suits travellers who want their own kitchen and braai rather than a hotel dining room. It works well as a base for a few days on the Garden Route, with town a short drive away.
What to expect
The units come in several shapes: freestanding and semi-attached double cabins, double-storey cabins, a two-bedroom family cabin and a three-bedroom family house. They have air-conditioning and their own braai. There is a communal swimming pool in the garden. Groups of up to 24 can book the whole property for exclusive use.

Good to know
You will want a car. Old Place is residential, and while the lagoon edge is close, restaurants and shops mean a drive into the centre. The family houses are the better pick for groups, as the double cabins are sized for couples. The extra-length king beds are a small thing that tall travellers will appreciate.
