Dijembe is a backpacker lodge on Formosa Street in Storms River Village, the small settlement just off the N2 that serves as the gateway to the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. It is aimed squarely at budget travellers and adventure seekers: the Baz Bus stops at the entrance, and the lodge books the bungy, ziplines, tubing and forest rides that bring most people to this corner of the Eastern Cape.

What to expect

Beds range from dorms (the frames are carved by hand) to private doubles with their own bathroom and queen beds, and there is room to pitch a tent. Guests share a kitchen and braai area, and there is a bar, a jacuzzi on an upper deck and an outdoor fire pit. The lodge cooks evening meals for those who want them, serves breakfast outside, and runs informal drum and didgeridoo sessions.

Practical details

  • Address: 59 Formosa Street, Storms River Village.
  • The Baz Bus hop-on, hop-off shuttle stops at the lodge entrance.
  • Horse trails of about two hours into the forest leave from the lodge, and mountain bikes can be hired for the 22 km Storms River cycle route.
  • The lodge arranges the Bloukrans Bridge bungy, ziplines, canopy tours and river tubing. The Otter, Tsitsikamma and Dolphin trails all start nearby.
  • The Tsitsikamma park entrance is about 5 km west of the village along the N2.

Good to know

This is a sociable backpackers rather than a quiet retreat, so light sleepers should ask for a private room. Bring a car or plan around the Baz Bus timetable, because Storms River Mouth, the suspension bridge and the coastal trailheads are a drive away rather than a walk.
