Kings Camp

Kings Camp is a safari lodge in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger west of the Kruger National Park boundary. There are no fences between the Timbavati and the Kruger, so animals move freely across. People come for Big Five game viewing with a traditional, colonial-style lodge to come back to, and Hoedspruit’s airport is close by.

What to expect

Accommodation is in standard, family and honeymoon suites, each with its own veranda and plunge pool, indoor and outdoor showers and air-conditioning. Waterbuck Private Camp is a separate four-bedroom villa for families or groups who want their own space.

Days follow the classic safari rhythm: a morning and an afternoon game drive in open vehicles, with guided walks on offer. There is an underground hide at the waterhole for eye-level viewing. Meals move between the dining room, the terrace and an open-air boma, and there is a bar, observation lounge, wine cellar and spa. Visitors go hoping for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, and the reserve also has cheetah, wild dog and hyena.

• Self-drive guests enter through the Timbavati reserve gate, so check gate procedures before you set off.

Good to know

Kosher meals are prepared on site under supervision, which is unusual for a bush lodge. There is also a bush gym, and the lodge can arrange outings to the Blyde River Canyon if you want a break from game drives.
