Sabi River Sun Resort
Southern Sun resort on the Sabie River outside Hazyview with an 18-hole golf course, five pools and 60 hotel rooms, about 20 minutes from Phabeni Gate.
Sabi River Sun is a large Southern Sun resort on the Main Sabie Road (R536) outside Hazyview, set on the banks of the Sabie River. It is built around an 18-hole golf course and a lot of lawn, and it is aimed at families and golfers who want a resort with plenty to do between drives into Kruger National Park. Phabeni Gate is roughly 20 minutes away by car.
What to expect
The hotel side has 60 en-suite, air-conditioned rooms, each with two double beds, looking onto either the gardens or the golf course. There are also 104 self-catering chalets, but these are for timeshare owners. Facilities are extensive: five outdoor pools, Heather’s Spa, tennis, squash, pickleball and volleyball courts, and play areas plus a day programme for children. The golf course has resident hippos, and the dam alongside the 16th green is the usual place to spot them.
Sesonke Restaurant serves the breakfast buffet, which is included with rooms, and offers buffet or à la carte lunch and dinner. Lighter lunches are served on the pool terrace.

Good to know
This is a full-service resort rather than a bush lodge, so do not expect a safari camp atmosphere. Golfers should book tee times ahead. Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window are within day-trip range for a break from game viewing. Keep well back from the hippos on the course, as they are wild and can be dangerous on land.
