The Beverly Hills is uMhlanga’s landmark beachfront hotel, a ten-storey block at 1 Lighthouse Road between the pier and the red-and-white lighthouse. It opened on 6 December 1964 as the first hotel in Sol Kerzner’s group, and today runs under Southern Sun. Book it for the position: every room faces the Indian Ocean and the beach is right below.

What to expect

There are 89 rooms and suites, up from the original 72, all with a private balcony and a sea view. Categories run from standard rooms through cabanas at pool and lobby level to junior and presidential suites. Rooms are furnished in a traditional style rather than anything minimalist. Dining is split between The Sugar Club for formal dinners, Elements Café Bar for seafood and casual meals, and The Lounge and Vista Terrace for drinks. There is an outdoor pool, a 24-hour gym and a Mangwanani spa.

Practical details

Good to know

Its neighbour on the same stretch of beachfront is The Oyster Box, the other grand old uMhlanga hotel, so compare the two if you are choosing. The name is said to come from Kerzner’s daughter Beverley, though some accounts credit the Hollywood association instead.
