Best Time to Visit Kruger: Month by Month
Short answer: For game viewing, go in the dry season, June to September, when the bush is thin, animals gather at water and malaria risk is lowest. For birds, green scenery and fewer cars outside the holidays, go November to March and accept heat, rain and malaria tablets.
Quick answers
What is the best month to visit Kruger National Park?
For most first-time visitors, August or September. It is the end of the dry season, so grass is short and animals concentrate at rivers and dams, average daytime highs at Skukuza are about 28 to 31°C, and rain averages under 30 mm a month.
When is the rainy season in Kruger?
Roughly November to March, with most rain falling in afternoon thunderstorms. At Skukuza January and February each average around 110 mm, against under 12 mm a month in June, July and August (1991 to 2020 averages).
Is there malaria in Kruger, and when is it worst?
Yes. The NICD classes Kruger as a moderate risk malaria area and the high transmission season runs from September to May, peaking after the rains. Risk is lower from June to August but not zero, so speak to a travel clinic about tablets for any visit.
When is Kruger busiest?
The December to mid January summer holidays, Easter and the South African school holidays in late June to July and late September to early October. For 2026 the summer break runs from 10 December 2026 to the second week of January 2027.
When is the best time for birding in Kruger?
November to March, when migrant species from Europe, Asia and elsewhere in Africa arrive and resident birds are breeding. Most migrants leave by about mid April.
There isn’t a bad month for Kruger, but there are months that suit different people. The park is in the lowveld, low and hot, with summer rain and a long dry winter, and that one fact drives almost everything: how easy the animals are to see, how hot the car gets, how many mosquitoes there are and how green the photos look.
Dry season, May to October
The rain stops in April and the bush slowly dries out. By July the grass is short and yellow, many trees have dropped their leaves and the seasonal pans are empty, so animals have to come to the rivers and the bigger dams to drink. That is why August and September are the classic game viewing months. You see further into the bush and you know where to wait.
Winter days are mild and nights are cold. At Skukuza the average high in June and July is about 27°C, but the average low is around 6°C, and in an open safari vehicle at 06:00 it feels a lot colder than that. Bring a proper warm jacket and a beanie for early drives. Gates also open later and close earlier in winter (06:00 to 17:30 from May to July), which our guide to Kruger gate times covers in detail.
October is the turn of the year. It is hot, dusty and often still dry until the first storms, and the animals are at their most concentrated just before the rain comes.
Wet season, November to April
The first good rains usually arrive in November. Within a couple of weeks the park goes green, impala and wildebeest drop their young (late November and December for impala), and the pans fill so animals spread out. Game is still everywhere, but it is harder to see through thick summer growth and you will work harder for leopard and lion.
It is properly hot. Average highs at Skukuza sit at about 33°C from November to March, and individual days go well past 40°C. Rain mostly falls as afternoon thunderstorms rather than all day, and January and February are the wettest months with about 110 mm each on average. Heavy years happen, though. In January 2026 floods closed gates, camps and roads in the north and centre of the park for weeks, so if you travel in midsummer keep an eye on SANParks notices.
Personally I think the wet season is underrated for a second or third visit. Fewer people come outside the Christmas rush, the light is softer after a storm and the birding is in another league.
Kruger month by month
Temperatures and rainfall are Skukuza averages for 1991 to 2020. The north of the park (Punda Maria, Pafuri) is generally hotter, and the south around Pretoriuskop is a little cooler and wetter.

Malaria by season
Kruger is in South Africa’s malaria area, which the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) describes as the low lying parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and northern KwaZulu-Natal. The NICD classes Kruger as moderate risk and says the high transmission season runs from September to May, when it is warm and wet enough for the mosquitoes to breed. Cases tail off from May and are lowest from June to the end of August.
Low risk is not no risk. In 2026 the NICD reported that malaria cases rose across parts of southern Africa after the unusually heavy rain and flooding, with more than 300 cases in Mpumalanga in January alone. Doxycycline and atovaquone-proguanil can be bought without a prescription at South African pharmacies, but see a travel clinic before you go, because the right choice depends on your age and health and doxycycline is not suitable for children under eight. Whatever you take, cover up and use a DEET repellent after dark. If you get a fever or flu-like illness within a few weeks of your trip, ask for a malaria test the same day and tell the doctor you were in Kruger.
School holidays and busy periods
South Africans love Kruger and they come in the school holidays. The 2026 public school breaks are 28 March to 7 April, 27 June to 20 July, 24 September to 5 October, and 10 December 2026 to mid January 2027. Easter 2026 falls inside the autumn break.
In those weeks the rest camps sell out months ahead and the southern gates can hit their day visitor quotas. Booking accommodation as early as possible is the single best thing you can do. Weekends and public holidays are busier than weekdays all year round.
If you want the dry season without the crowds, mid May to mid June and the first three weeks of September are hard to beat. The conservation fee for foreign visitors goes up on 1 November 2026, and you can price a whole stay with our park fee calculator.
Birding season
Kruger has more than 500 recorded bird species, and summer is when it shines. Migrant birds from Europe, Asia and further north in Africa arrive from about October and November and leave by mid April, and many residents are breeding and in full colour. Birders often aim for November to February. The far north around Pafuri is the most famous birding area in the park, though check that the roads there have reopened after the 2026 flood damage.
