Gorah Manor House
Gorah Elephant Camp, a tented camp built around an 1856 manor house on a private concession inside Addo Elephant National Park, facing a busy waterhole.
Gorah Elephant Camp is built around an 1856 manor house, now a national monument, on a private concession inside Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape. When it opened in December 2000 it was the first private concession in a South African national park. It is run by Hunter Hotels, and its draw is malaria-free Big Five game viewing with silver-service dining in a Victorian-era house.
What to expect
Guests sleep in 11 tented suites under thatch, each with an en-suite bathroom, ceiling fans, a sitting area and a private deck. The manor house is the social centre, and its veranda faces a waterhole where elephant herds come to drink, so there is game to watch between drives.
Activities centre on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, usually twice a day. Meals are full board and fairly formal, with lunch, afternoon tea and dinner served indoors or outside overlooking the waterhole.

Good to know
The atmosphere leans traditional and dressy, so it suits couples and older families more than young children. Addo is a malaria-free Big Five area, which makes Gorah an easy fit for travellers who would rather avoid malaria tablets. Elephants are the headline, as the camp’s name suggests.
