Place to stay in Durban
Gooderson Tropicana Hotel
A long-running mid-range hotel on Durban's Marine Parade, with family rooms, self-catering units and sea views across South Beach.
The Gooderson Tropicana is one of the older hotels on Durban’s beachfront, standing at 85 Marine Parade on the South Beach end of the Golden Mile. It is a straightforward, family-oriented place where the selling points are the location and the room sizes rather than polish. Trip.com dates it to 1954, and with five conference rooms it hosts business groups as well as holidaymakers.
What to expect
There are five room types. Most are family rooms of around 35 square metres that sleep up to four, some facing the sea head-on and some with a side view. Standard doubles are a little smaller. The self-catering four-sleeper units, at about 40 square metres, have their own kitchen and are the pick for longer stays or anyone feeding children on a budget. Rooms have air conditioning and showers.
Meals are taken at 7 Palms, which runs buffet and carvery service, or at Clippers Cafe and Bar for something lighter. The hotel also hosts weddings and events.

Good to know
The beach promenade is right outside, and uShaka Marine World is at the southern end of the same stretch. This part of the beachfront is lively and urban, so it is best for travellers who want to be in the thick of things rather than somewhere quiet. Ask for a sea-facing room when booking if the view matters to you, as not every room has one.
