Kragga Kamma Game Park is a game park of coastal forest and grassland on Kragga Kamma Road in Theescombe, on the outskirts of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). It is not a big-five reserve, but it is the easiest place near the city to see rhino and giraffe without a long drive. It suits visitors short of time, families with small children, and anyone who wants a taste of game viewing before or after the bigger parks of the Eastern Cape.

What to expect

You drive yourself around in your own car, since the roads are kept in good enough shape that a 4x4 is not needed, and stop as often as you like. Animals on the property include white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, nyala, bontebok and lechwe. If you prefer a guide, two-hour drives in open vehicles are offered. On foot, the Monkey Walk is a short forest stroll where vervet monkeys are the usual sighting, and cheetahs and blue duiker turn up now and then. Birders can use the Treetop Boardwalk.

The Bush Café serves lunch, and there are shaded picnic and braai spots for those who bring their own food.

Practical details

The park opens daily from 8am to 5pm. The address is Kragga Kamma Road, Theescombe, Gqeberha. Telephone +27 41 379 4195 or email info@kraggakamma.co.za. Overnight guests can stay in a small set of lodges, chalets and log cabins on the property, all self-catering.

Good to know

Treat this as a short outing rather than a safari. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for activity. Keep to your car among the rhino and buffalo, however relaxed they look. If you have a full day, Addo Elephant National Park is the bigger draw in the area.
