Hoedspruit is a small town in the Limpopo Lowveld at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg, surrounded by the private game reserves that border Kruger National Park. The name means “hat creek” in Afrikaans, after a settler who lost his hat in a flooded stream in 1844. Farms grow mangoes, citrus and macadamias; everything else is safari. Most people fly in, get collected by a lodge vehicle and see the town only through the window, but it is a useful self-drive base for Kruger and the Blyde River Canyon.
Getting there
Eastgate Airport is on the R40 about 7 km south of town and shares its runway with an air force base. Airlink flies in from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and CemAir has also run scheduled services. The airport is not well signposted from town. By road it is 453 km from Johannesburg via Belfast and Dullstroom, or 529 km via Polokwane, five to six hours either way. Kruger’s Orpen Gate is roughly 60 km and about an hour to the east. Hire cars are available at the airport and transfer companies serve the lodges.
When to go
The dry season, May to September, is the time for game viewing: the bush thins out and animals gather at water. Days are warm and dawn drives are cold, so pack a fleece and a beanie. The wet season, October to April, is hot and green with heavy afternoon rain, better for birds and newborn antelope, worse for spotting predators. Lodges are fullest in the dry months and over Christmas, so book early for those.
What to do
The reserves around town, Timbavati, Klaserie, Balule, Kapama and Thornybush among them, offer the Big Five on guided drives and bush walks with qualified rangers. Self-drivers enter Kruger at Orpen for the day. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, founded in 1990 and a cheetah breeding centre, and the Moholoholo rehabilitation centre for injured raptors and cats are both close to town and good for a half day.
West of Hoedspruit the escarpment rises to the Blyde River Canyon and the Panorama Route viewpoints. Operators run hot-air balloon flights, horse rides, cycling and microlight trips over the reserves. The Kamogelo Centre has the tourist shops and restaurants, the town has its own brewery, and fuel is easy to find.
Good to know
Hoedspruit is in Mopani District, which the CDC lists as a high-risk malaria area where prophylaxis is recommended. See a travel clinic before you travel and use repellent from dusk. Risk is highest in the hot wet months. Do not drive the rural roads after dark; they are unfenced and animals wander onto them. The town has a private hospital with 24-hour emergency care. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but carry some cash for roadside stalls and tips. Mobile coverage is good in town and weak in the reserves, where lodges rely on Wi-Fi.
