Sight in Hout Bay
Norval Foundation
A private art museum in Steenberg, Cape Town, showing art from Africa and its diaspora, with a sculpture garden set around a restored wetland.

The Norval Foundation is an art museum on Steenberg Road in Tokai, in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, given over to modern and contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. It opened on 28 April 2018 in a building by dhk Architects, beside the edge of Table Mountain National Park. With rotating exhibitions, a sculpture garden and a restaurant, it makes a good half-day in the south of the city and an easy pairing with the Constantia wine farms.
What to expect
Inside are several galleries with changing exhibitions. Edoardo Villa is a recurring name: The Last Villas, a show of steel sculpture from his final years, runs until the end of December 2026. Outside, the sculpture garden was landscaped by Keith Kirsten around a wetland that is home to the endangered Western Leopard Toad. Invasive plants were cleared and replaced with fynbos and other local species, so the garden is worth a walk in its own right.
The site also has an outdoor amphitheatre, a library and a restaurant. Guided tours can be arranged.
Practical details
The address is 4 Steenberg Road, Tokai, Cape Town. It is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and on Sundays and public holidays, 10am to 4pm. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Telephone +27 87 654 5900.
Good to know
The Monday and Tuesday closure catches people out, so plan around it. Book the restaurant ahead at weekends. The garden gives restless children room to move, and the foundation’s Learning Centre runs school programmes.
