Sandra Pelser Art

This is the working studio of Sandra Pelser, a South African painter who has made a name with one subject: calm, stylised women in oil. Her ladies are sold on prints and plates in shops and galleries around the country, so the style may already look familiar. The studio is on Leisure Isle in the Knysna lagoon and you visit by appointment, so it suits people who already like her work rather than casual browsers.

What to expect

Pelser was born in Gauteng in 1963, started painting as a hobby in 1992 while working a day job, and went full time in March 2010. She works mainly in oils on board and paints without sketching first. She says she never repeats a painting, and her current series of women runs past 1,700 originals.

Alongside the originals there is a range of smaller pieces built on the same images: box prints, painted wooden blocks, wall plates, notebooks and pendants. These are easier to fit in a suitcase than a framed oil.

Good to know

Leisure Isle is on the Knysna side of the lagoon, near the Heads, so a visit fits well with a morning at the Eastern Head. Message ahead so someone is there to let you in.
