House of Rooibos

Clanwilliam is the centre of the rooibos trade, and House of Rooibos is the visitor face of Rooibos Ltd, which has been supplying rooibos from here since 1954. It opened in July 2019 and now sits at the Rooibos Country Club on the corner of Augsburg Road and Foster Street. If you’ve drunk rooibos for years without knowing where it comes from, this is a worthwhile short stop.

What to expect

There is a shop and an information centre. The centre runs an audiovisual presentation on the history of rooibos, how it is farmed and processed, and its health claims, available in eight languages, and you can do a tea tasting. You can also order rooibos drinks and snacks while you browse.

The range goes well beyond tea bags: green rooibos, honeybush, flavoured blends, iced tea and cordials, capsules, cosmetics and skincare, and gift and souvenir packs. Rooibos is caffeine free and grows only in this part of the Western Cape, so a box from the source makes an obvious present to take home.

For background, VoiceMap’s Clanwilliam walking tour notes that it was Benjamin Ginsberg, an immigrant, who started selling rooibos as “mountain tea” in the early 1900s. Research in the 1960s into its antioxidants is what pushed sales.
