Oom Samie se Winkel (Uncle Samie’s Shop) is a general dealer at 84 Dorp Street, one of the oldest shops still trading in Stellenbosch. In 1904 the Volsteedt family bought the plot, with a shop already on it, for their son Samuel, whose weak back kept him off the farm. He ran it as a general dealer until his death in 1944, and the name stuck. It is a browse on a Dorp Street walk, not a destination.

What to expect

Inside it still works like a country general dealer, the kind of shop that sold a bit of everything before supermarkets. Expect household basics next to jars of jam, bags of spice, handmade goods and second-hand odds and ends. Wikipedia lists traditional foods such as bokkoms (dried salted fish), sour fig jam, honey and rooibos tea among what it sells. Some of it is aimed squarely at visitors, but there is enough genuinely old-fashioned stock to make it more than a souvenir shop.

Practical details

The shop is at 84 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch. It opens Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm. Telephone +27 21 887 2372.

Good to know

Dorp Street is one of the best streets in town for old Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings, so walk it rather than drive. Half an hour in the shop is plenty for most people. If you want to try bokkoms, ask the staff how locals eat them before you commit to a whole bunch.
