Wildfarm Homestead

Wildfarm Homestead, long known as The Wild Farm Backpackers, occupies the old farm Uitsig in the hills above Wilderness. The Afrikaans name means “the view”, and it is earned: the Indian Ocean lies to the south, the Wilderness lakes to the east and the Outeniqua Mountains to the north. It is a former dairy farm turned budget lodge, and it suits backpackers and families who want space and a farm feel rather than a beachfront strip.

What to expect

Rooms range from dorm beds to budget doubles, en-suite doubles, log rooms, family chalets and a camping area. The communal heart is a large open-plan kitchen and TV lounge, a shaded veranda and a sunset deck with braai facilities. A wood-fired pizza bar runs from 4pm to 9:30pm daily, and a self-service breakfast is included from 8am.

The farm runs on grid-tied solar with lithium battery backup, so load-shedding does not cut the lights. The owners document the off-grid homestead project on YouTube.

Good to know

Surfing, kitesurfing, mountain biking and hiking in the Garden Route National Park are all close by. Being up on the hill, the farm is a drive rather than a stroll from the beach and village, so a car or a lift helps. There is also a sister property in Knysna if you want to split your stay.
