Swellendam was declared a magisterial district in 1745, which makes it the third oldest town in the country after Cape Town and Stellenbosch. It sits at the foot of the Langeberg, whose Clock Peaks rise to 1,710 m straight behind the main street, with the Breede River plain spreading south. Most people treat it as a lunch stop on the N2; it deserves a night.

Getting there

Swellendam is on the N2 roughly 220 to 240 km from Cape Town, two and a half to three hours via Sir Lowry’s Pass and Caledon. It is a similar distance from George. An alternative from Cape Town is the N1 through the Huguenot Tunnel and then the R60 via Worcester and Robertson, which takes about as long and is prettier. Long-distance coaches pass through with limited stops and the Baz Bus calls here. There is no local public transport beyond minibus taxis from Tritchard Street, but the town is small enough to walk.

When to go

The climate is Mediterranean: January highs average around 31°C and July lows about 6°C, with roughly 560 mm of rain, mostly in winter. The mountains get occasional snow. South African Tourism suggests September to May and notes that a number of businesses close in the middle of winter. December brings the Garden Route holiday traffic through town. For hiking, autumn and spring are ideal; summer walks should start early.

What to do

The Drostdy Museum is the reason to stop. The Drostdy itself was built in 1747 as the magistrate’s seat and residence, and the complex takes in the Old Gaol, the Ambagswerf craft yard and the house called Mayville. The Dutch Reformed Church, known locally as the Wit Kerk, dates from 1798.

Marloth Nature Reserve begins at the top of town and covers about 14,000 hectares of mountain fynbos and forest. The Duiwelsbos waterfall walk is 2 km and two hours through shaded indigenous forest with a pool at the end. The Plaat Loop is 12 km and about three hours past mountain streams. Twaalfuurkop is the serious option: 12.4 km, six hours and 1,450 m of summit. The office is open 07:00 to 16:00 for permits, and the multi-day Swellendam Trail with its hikers’ huts starts here too. CapeNature warns that the weather changes fast on the peaks and says plainly not to hike alone.

A few kilometres south, Bontebok National Park protects the antelope that was down to 17 animals in 1931, along with Cape mountain zebra and more than 100 bird species, with picnic spots on the Breede.

Good to know

The town is named after Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Berries are grown in the Hermitage Valley just outside town and turn up on every menu in season. The Breede is the longest navigable river in South Africa; ships once came 35 km upstream to Malgas. Pack boots and a warm layer even in summer if you intend to go up the mountain.
