Place to stay in Montagu
African Game Lodge
An off-grid lodge on a 4,500-hectare private reserve in the mountains outside Montagu, with self-catering chalets, tents, game drives and hiking.
African Game Lodge sits on a private 4,500-hectare reserve in the Klein Karoo mountains outside Montagu, in the Western Cape. This is not a Big Five safari lodge. The draw is space and quiet: Karoo landscapes, antelope and birds, and nights well away from town lights, about 2.5 hours’ drive from Cape Town.
What to expect
There are three ways to stay: Karoo chalets named after antelope and other animals, luxury tents and a bush caravan site. The chalets are Karoo-style cottages sized for families, and stays are self-catering, so you cook for yourself and braai in the evenings.
Activities on the reserve include game drives, hiking trails, walks and mountain biking. Wildlife is mostly plains game such as antelope, along with a good range of birds. The lodge welcomes families.
